Biotechnology to the rescue: Could it put an end to sargassum invasions?
Keywords:
Microorganisms, Algae, BioprocessesAbstract
Sargassum is a growing environmental problem in the Caribbean and other regions, affecting both coastal ecosystems and the local economy. The accumulation of algae on beaches is not only a visual inconvenience but also releases toxic compounds and greenhouse gases. But all is not lost! Biotechnology comes up with innovative alternatives to make efficient use of it. Methods such as anaerobic digestion, fermentation and composting have the potential to transform these algae into bioenergy, biocompounds and fertilizers. In this article we will explore biotechnological research that shows how to turn this problem into something positive.
