VIRI and the journey of targeted medicine

This science communication story presents Athena, a science student who designs VIRI, a virus-like particle (VLP) that transports drugs to tumor cells. The story explains that VLPs resemble viruses on the outside because they retain a protein capsid, but they are empty on the inside and lack the genetic material required for replication, so they cannot cause disease. Instead, they function as vehicles that protect the medicine, recognize the correct cell, and release it at its destination. Thus, they show that a therapy requires protection, direction, and precision.
