Lignin: Treasure for a sustainable industry
Keywords:
Lignin, biomass, bioeconomy, sustainable materialsAbstract
Lignin is a complex natural polymer within the plant cell wall that provides rigidity, mechanical strength, and pathogen defense. Historically dismissed as a mere byproduct of the pulp and paper industry, it is now recognized as a strategic feedstock for the global bioeconomy. This review examines its molecular architecture, structural diversity, and current extraction methods. Furthermore, it analyzes emerging applications in bioplastics, composite materials, carbon fibers, adhesives, and high-value platform chemicals. Finally, the main technical and economic challenges hindering its industrial-scale valorization are discussed, highlighting lignin’s pivotal role in the transition toward a sustainable and circular economy.
