Abstract

A biomaterial is a synthetic or naturally occurring material used to replace biological structures that have been lost or damaged by disease; these materials are used to restore organic form or function. The use and coverage of prosthetics have increased, along with technological advances and market expansion. This is why new biomaterials have been developed to drive the creation of medical devices with improved properties that address specific challenges. This article discusses what a biomaterial is, the challenges associated with it, why they fail, some examples of biomaterials, and more.
