Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) and its antioxidants against microbes
Keywords:
Eucalyptus, intestinal bacteria, antioxidantsAbstract
Traditional medicine, which constitutes 80% of the world’s medicines, plays a crucial role in primary healthcare. This study reveals that both the leaves and stems of eucalyptus contain antioxidant compounds (43 and 49% respectively) and antimicrobial properties by inhibiting the growth of intestinal bacteria by more than 90%. Being that dilutions of 1:60 of the eucalyptus extract were sufficient to stop bacterial growth. This finding suggests the potential of eucalyptus as a complement to antibiotics, especially in communities with limited access to these medications.
